What is a Tentmaker?
A tentmaker is a Christian who uses his profession or work skills in order to live in an unreached area so that he may use his spiritual gifts and ministry skills to reach people cross-culturally. This biblical strategy was used by the Apostle Paul who made tents to pay expenses while his primary intent was to spread the Gospel (Acts 18:3). Tentmaking allows for an identity and source of income but always has a discipleship purpose and motivation. It links the person (tentmaker) with the method - and then disciples are the result. What Tentmakers Are Not!
People do not become tentmakers in order to avoid raising support, to escape specialized training, or to be their own bosses, without accountability. Nor do they cross cultural barriers for financial reward, or to advance their career or because of the challenge or excitement. People become tentmakers because they recognize the call of God on their life and have a desire to bring the Good News to those who have not yet heard. They have a passion for spiritual ministry and are willing and ready to use alternative means.
